Survival of the fittest

I was watching the news. The news ‘Sophia the new artificial intelligence got citizenship of Saudi Arabia’ flashed. The news channel then raised the same old question, in the same old dramatic fashion: ‘Will robots take over the world’. And that got me thinking.

No, fear not, this is not another speech were I, in the first paragraph will tell you the benefits of robots, then in the next the dangers that could arise if we are careless (like we usually are) and then, conclude saying that: every coin has two sides, similarly, there are two side to AI too. It simply depends on how we use it. Applause.

I am writing this to point out something which I observed. This development of artificial intelligence, robots for work in our world of humans, doesn’t it create a situation like the jungle rule of survival of the fittest? It is completely true, without any debate, that AI, when developed, is going to replace some jobs of humans. For example, consider developing a software for a restaurant which has the menu of the restaurant updated in it. Instead of a waiter there will be a chat system which asks for your order, whether you want something extra, the bill and of course, greet you in the typical hospitality language. This system will be extremely helpful for people who find it difficult to talk to people, don’t want to talk to people, just want some peace, are a loner. The food can be given by a person or a robot. Sounds good right, and possible too, because of the technological progress. (BTW if you want this idea, I need to have copyright/idea-right and also some share of profit. We can negotiate the terms later. xD) So, by this example I think it’s roughly clear that although jobs will be created, jobs will be lost too. But, if we observe, the jobs that will be lost will be those that require comparatively lesser intelligence. If this idea becomes successful, the hotel management industry can suffer a major loss. Of course, man adapts and changes, hence, he will learn and find a better job, create a better job. This leads to my point, with development in the technology, the relatively easy jobs will be lost to robots and man would need to be prepared for a better task. The person who is comparatively intelligent, fit, hard worker will survive this techno-wave. The survival of the fittest will occur again, cause accept it or not, it is the truth that we are constantly combating for a better life. Albeit we claim that our competition is with ourselves and we just want a happy & peaceful life, the person who doesn’t survive this change fades away, is left behind. Thus, we humans, the species better than rest, aren’t we all slowly adapting the jungle policy of survival of the fittest? Maybe not for us, but our future generations have a high chance of facing this. I may be wrong in judging the situation , but the only solution I can think of right now is to learn the peace and love methods our sages and gurus taught us and put them into action.

  1. Where I worked (in the prehistoric days) there was a whole department dedicated to sorting out mail. Can you believe it? Now we text; we communicate through Facebook and Twitter. Robots are already with us, only not yet in human form. I suspect that when they get here, we are done for. 🙂
